UN-Energy Experts Call for Increased Investment in Power Grid Connectivity and Improved Governance of Critical Raw Materials

Expert Webinar Presenters clockwise: Radia Sedaoui, Chief, Energy Section, UNESCWA; Rana Ghoneim, Chief, Energy Systems and Infrastructure Division, UNIDO (Moderator); Dario Liguti, Director, Sustainable Energy Division, UNECE; Hongpeng Liu, Director, Energy Division, UNESCAP.

More investment and harmonized regulatory frameworks are needed to improve power grid connectivity across borders, and thus enable greater access to and sharing of modern and renewable energy resources, as well as resilience in the face of power disruptions. To support sustainable management of supply and demand for raw materials such as cobalt, copper and lithium that are critical for the energy transition, we need to strengthen governance and promote diversification of sources as well as circular economies that re-use these minerals.

These were among the key recommendations made on 27 June by UN-Energy experts at a webinar on "Facilitating the Just and Inclusive Energy Transition: Supporting the Sustainable Development of Critical Raw Materials and Advancing Power System Connectivity." The full recommendations can be found in the policy briefs on these two important issues which will be published and available here shortly.
