Progress on achieving SDG 6

2020 Voluntary National Review

Nepal reported improvement in basic water supply coverage, reaching coverage for 91% of the population in 2019, and basic sanitation coverage has reached 99% of the population in 2019. The country also reported that the proportion of people using latrines has increased from 67.6% in 2015 to 85% in 2019. Nepal informed to face some challenges in providing safe drinking water, as only 25% of the population currently has access to safe sources. Additionally, they noted that the amount of untreated industrial waste in water remains at 95%, and the target of 75.3% in 2019 was not met. Nepal acknowledged that the SDG target of achieving universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all needs to be accelerated. The country stated that they plan to continue action on SDG 6 by increasing measures of protection for freshwater sources and water sources, along with improving integrated water resources management plans in order to ensure equitable supply and access to water. The government of Nepal has also committed to ensuring equal access of WASH facilities to high- and low-income households, as well as addressing the disparity between different provinces and regions.
