The HESI Education for Green Jobs action group focuses on :
Supporting curricula updates and workforce development coalitions to help higher education and related stakeholders build the workforce needed for a green, inclusive and sustainable future.
Improving education, career advising and job placement processes to promote green and sustainability careers.
This HESI action group also supports higher education’s contributions to the fulfillment of national climate commitments. The activities from this action group include: events for connecting workforce development specialists, employers and educators, sharing effective strategies, promoting related HESI events and activities, and providing communications and informational support for those working to create changes toward education for green jobs.
Background
The HESI Education for Green Jobs action group originated from HESI’s work with the United Nations Environment Programme, through the Youth Education Alliance (UNEP-YEA). Co-authored with the US Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development and with input from staff at multiple UN agencies, higher education associations and the World Bank, UNEP-YEA produced the Global Guidance for Education on Green Jobs: Connecting Higher Education and Green Opportunities for Planetary Health. This document includes a framework, dozens of resources and key actions for educators to prepare students to participate in the transition to a green and more inclusive economy. It includes content on knowledge enhancement, skills and competency development, and job opportunities. See more about some of the now expanded multi-UN agency efforts regarding green jobs for youth here.
This HESI action group worked extensively with the Clean Energy Ministerial to provide a series of Solutions Summits and a toolkit of resources and strategies to create the workforce needed for a clean and inclusive energy transition. Participants from over one hundred countries received these materials.
This HESI action group is also participating in the UNESCO Greening Education Partnership higher education working group. See more information about this UNESCO initiative here.
