2026 UN Water Conference

As specified in General Assembly resolution 78/327, the Conference will be open to the delegations and representatives of the following:

  • All States Members of the United Nations and members of specialized agencies;

  • Intergovernmental organizations, international financial institutions and other international bodies already accredited;

  • Associate members of the regional commissions;

  • Specialized agencies and related organizations;

  • Other intergovernmental organizations and other international bodies;

  • Interested United Nations organs;

  • Accredited non-governmental and other stakeholder organizations;

  • Media.

ALL STATES MEMBERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS AND MEMBERS OF SPECIALIZED AGENCIES

Registration of the official delegations of participating States is handled by the Protocol and Liaison Service through the online eRegistration system, which is available through the e-deleGATE portal (https://edelegate.un.int ).

To register for the Conference, official delegations will need to coordinate with the designated eRegistration focal points of their respective permanent or observer mission or liaison office in New York, who have access to the eRegistration system. It will be possible to request registration on-site in Abu Dhabi for those categories, but the request will need to be submitted through the respective permanent or observer mission or liaison office in New York through the online eRegistration system and will take two days for review and processing.

INTERGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS, INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL BODIES ALREADY ACCREDITED

Intergovernmental organizations and other entities that have received a standing invitation to participate as observers in the sessions and work of the General Assembly or intergovernmental organizations accredited to the UN Conferences/Meetings listed below are accredited to participate in the Conference:

  • the World Summit on Sustainable Development

  • the United Nations Conference on the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018–2028

  • the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development

  • the intergovernmental conference on an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction

  • the United Nations Conference on Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks

  • the Review Conference on the Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks

  • the international meeting entitled “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity”

  • the 2017 and 2022 United Nations Conferences to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

  • the United Nations conferences on the sustainable development of small island developing States (SIDS): Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, 26 April-6 May 1994, Bridgetown, Barbados; International Meeting to Review the Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, 10-14 January 2005, Port Louis, Mauritius; and/or Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States, 1-4 September 2014, Apia, Samoa; 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States, 27 – 30 May 2024, St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda

(A) Those organizations that fall within one of the categories listed above and are already enrolled in the online “eRegistration” system may follow the same procedure for States, through the “designated eRegistration focal points” of the organizations or their respective Observer Missions in New York, who have access to the eRegistration system.

(B) Those organizations that fall within one of the categories listed above and that have not enrolled in the online “eRegistration” system must request temporary access to the system in advance to register to the Conference. Requests for temporary access to the eRegistration system must be received by the Protocol Office.

To request temporary access to the eRegistration system, a letter (stamped and signed by the head of the organization) must be sent to the Chief of Protocol (Ms. Beatrix Kania) at protocolconference@un.org providing a designated focal point for the organization (with name, functional title, contact number (work and mobile) and an official email address) to receive temporary access to the eRegistration system. For detailed instructions, please refer to the guidelines for applying for an eRegistration account under temporary access only, posted on the website of the Protocol and Liaison Service, available here.

ASSOCIATED MEMBERS OF THE REGIONAL COMMISSIONS

Representatives of associate members of regional commissions (American Samoa, Anguilla, Aruba, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Curaçao, French Polynesia, Guadeloupe, Guam, Martinique, Montserrat, New Caledonia, Puerto Rico, Sint Maarten, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the United States Virgin Islands) are required to follow the same registration procedure highlighted in para (B) for IGOs not enrolled in the “eRegistration” system, for issuance of a Conference pass.

SPECIALIZED AGENCIES AND RELATED ORGANIZATIONS

The representatives of the Specialized Agencies (FAO, ICAO, IFAD, ILO, IMF, IMO, ITU, UNESCO, UNIDO, UNWTO, UPU, WHO, World Bank, WIPO and WMO), and related organizations (which include CTBTO Preparatory Commission, IAEA, ICC, IOM, ISA, ITLOS, OPCW and WTO) will be required to follow the same procedures as for Member States and IGOs to register for the Conference.

OTHER INTERGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL BODIES

Intergovernmental organizations that have not received a standing invitation to participate as observers in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly that were not accredited to the UN Conferences/Meetings listed above, and that are interested in obtaining an ad hoc accreditation for 2026 United Nations Water Conference to Accelerate the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all (2 to 4 December 2026, United Arab Emirates) may submit an application addressed to the President of the General Assembly by 2 July 2026.

Interested IGOs are invited to send a letter from the head of the organization on official letterhead (with the original signature) addressed to the President of the General Assembly requesting for ad hoc accreditation to the Conference and describing the work of the organization related to the Conference objectives; provide copies of the treaty establishing the organization; information concerning the date of entry into force of the treaty and those States that are parties to the treaty; provide information on the membership of the organization; and submit the latest annual report.

Upon review of the applications by the Secretariat, the applications will be forwarded to the General Assembly for its consideration.

Only after the approval by the General Assembly, will the representatives of the ad hoc accredited IGO be issued a Conference pass in accordance with the same procedures for other approved participants.

Kindly note that the deadline for ad hoc/special accreditation of IGOs will close on 2 July 2026. No applications will be accepted after that date.

INTERESTED UNITED NATIONS ORGANS

Registration will be required for all UN Secretariat staff members who have been designated to support the Conference on-site, as well as those representatives of the UN Secretariat offices, funds, programmes, regional commissions, and other entities who wish to attend the Conference in person.

ACCREDITED NON-GOVERNMENTAL AND OTHER STAKEHOLDER ORGANIZATIONS

Please note that there will be no on-site registration for this category of participants.

MEDIA

Media representatives including journalists, photographers and videographers who are not part of official delegations, must apply for accreditation through the United Nations Media Accreditation and Liaison Unit (MALU) online form (https://indico.un.org/UNHQ/#media). When completing the form, applicants should select Temporary Pass in the Pass Details section and enter the conference title and dates in the Assignment fields. Applicants will be required to submit a letter of assignment from a bona fide media organization addressed to the United Nations, samples of their work, and a government issued identification. Independent broadcast or film production companies must provide a letter from a broadcast organization or film distributor which has committed to air or distribute the work. Media representatives who are a part of official delegations, including journalists and official photo and video, must be registered through their respective permanent/observer mission or liaison office in New York through the online “eRegistration system”, which is available on the e-deleGATE portal at https://e-delegate.un.org. Designated e-Registration focal points may refer to the instructions: https://www.un.org/en/media/accreditation/pdf/eRegistration_guide_media_passes.pdf. Spokespersons, communications advisers, and information officers without camera equipment do not need to apply for a media pass.  

Delegation media personnel seeking on-site registration will be instructed to submit the request through their respective permanent/observer mission or liaison office in New York via the online eRegistration system. Please note that on-site registration is not possible for media that are not part of official delegations.

Notes: 

  • Media accreditation is not issued to information outlets or advocacy publications of non-governmental organizations.

  • Media representatives should apply either on their own OR through the delegations. Duplicate requests will be rejected. 

  • Media accredited to UN Headquarters in New York must still apply for accreditation to the Conference.
