    Description
    Description

The Watoto Na Vijana Wetu In Action 8-year and half national educational initiative aims to cultivate the SDGs in every Ugandan school. Our target audience includes all children and young people who, as learners, are vital agents of positive change in their wider communities and the custodians of a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future. As the leaders of tomorrow, we seek to create an enabling, positive, and productive learning environment in which learners are empowered beyond mere awareness to develop growth mindsets and "can-do" attitudes that foster personal initiative as positive social change agents for sustainable development. The three major objectives for this initiative are: 1) to close the long-standing achievement gap in inclusive and equitable quality education; 2) to promote lifelong learning opportunities that enable learners to be creative for positive social change and be responsible global citizens; and 3) to make sustainability a visible foundation of school culture by incorporating it as a core value in all primary, secondary, and TEVT education and training. Watoto Na Vijana Wetu In Action takes a whole-school approach to integrating the SDGs into school culture, teaching and learning, infrastructure and operations, and community partnerships. It includes a variety of dynamic training and development activities defined by UPG's four pillars: raising SDGs awareness; strengthening the belief that everyone can make a difference; fostering a sense of community and facilitating collaboration. Throughout this initiative, students will develop leadership skills and global competencies that will help them better handle the dynamic issues they may encounter both locally and worldwide, as well as engage in critical and contextualized understanding of the SDGs in educational settings; positive action for transformation and change towards the achievement of the SDGs; develop and make connections between environmental, economic, social, and political systems; and envision a better future through creative problem-solving. This activity-based learning will increase opportunities for children and young people to participate in sustainability projects that connect the curriculum to issues they have encountered or are likely to encounter in their lives. Students will be assessed regularly each academic term on their practical knowledge of sustainability through meaningful sustainability debates, discussions, written assignments, quizzes, and ultimately on the quality of the project/s that they complete as a school. The project/s will be deemed a success when they address the interconnected nature of the UN Agenda and can address at least one SDG. The success of these projects will be reported through the presentation of the students' work to the school community and the inclusion of a link to their work on the school website and Watoto Na Vijana Wetu in Action website. In addition, the student representatives are going to present this work to the Ministry of Education as a resource for the people of Uganda. Also, action items are included in the training material for learners to practice both individually and collectively in their homes, schools, and communities. This will serve as a foundation for further follow-up and information sharing with partners and beneficiaries.

    Expected Impact

In Uganda, there has been a deliberate effort to ensure synergy between the SDG and National Development Plans since January 2016 and will continue till December 2030. The youth are encouraged to innovate to harness the country's potential as a means of accelerating the implementation of the new SDG roadmap. The Watoto Na Vijana Wetu in Action initiative, with its learner-centered approach to integrating the SDGs into school culture, teaching, and learning, provides an opportunity for the development of long-term inclusive, collaborative, and equity-centered partnerships in schools, families, and the larger communities. This is aimed at providing responsiveness to real-world challenges such as environmental protection and the creation of a more socially just society. This will ultimately result in sustainable development being a reality in the lives of all young people and their wider communities. Hence, a people-centric, peaceful, and prosperous future for Uganda, where young educated and creative minds serve as the foundation for achieving all other SDGs and target indicators. The initiative has since May 9th, 2022, been underway with online and in-person community sessions to raise awareness of the SDGs and strengthen the notion that everyone can make a difference. Due to the interlinked nature of the SDGs, many of Watoto Na Vijana Wetu In Action activities will contribute to more than one SDG, including but not limited to the following: a) SDG 11: The initiative will encourage participation and confidence in all young learners. Starting at the primary level, by empowering and allowing children to be passionate, productive, and active participants through inculcating the skills needed to enact real positive change in their communities and, as such, foster sustainable cities and communities. b) SDG 4: The initiative will promote quality education by transforming the education system so that every young girl and boy in primary and secondary school can acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development. c) SDG 16: The initiative will encourage learners from all socioeconomic backgrounds to self-assess, express their opinions, and become aware of their fundamental civil rights and responsibilities at a young age, providing them with the tools they need to become active citizens who participate in their communities and advocate for accountable and transparent governance and policies. As a result, strong and just institutions will evolve, supporting peaceful and inclusive societies that are responsive, participatory, and representative of all the decision-makers. d) SDG 17: The initiative will foster effective and meaningful partnerships among schools, families, communities, and the public and private sectors, thereby strengthening national commitments to invest in young people in areas other than formal education, such as education for sustainable development and global citizen education, sustainable lifestyle, and innovation. e) SDG 3: The initiative will promote children's and young people's physical and mental well-being in a changing world by encouraging resilience, emotional strength, and self-care in the face of complex challenges in their daily lives.
