Description
Community Schools in Egypt were first introduced in 1992 as an alternative form of education to reduce dropout rates, especially amongst girls, in the most marginalized, deprived and remote villages in Upper Egypt. The CS movement has been a major contributor to increasing girl’s access to schools and the decrease in the gender disparity of student enrolment as well as achieving Universal Primary Education. In alignment with the state's efforts to improve education in Egypt, SFSD, launched the first phase of the Schools for Egypt (SFE) project in 2012, which aimed to offer quality educational opportunities through the establishment and development of community schools (one-classroom schools). The project has continued to expand ever since. Today the project encompasses 60 community schools established over three phases, under different partnerships. - The first phase, launched in 2013, involved the establishment of 30 CS in Assiut and Sohag. - The second phase, launched in 2015, involved the establishment of 15 CS in Qena, in partnership with Star Care Egypt and Shorouq Egypt - The third phase, launched in 2018, involved the establishment of 15 CS in Assuit in partnership with Orascom Construction. A cohort of around 30 students is enrolled in each school, and graduate after completing 6 years of primary education that prepares them to re-enroll in mainstream preparatory public schools. Within the scope of the project, 762 students graduated, in 2019, from the schools of the first phase of the project. Currently, 1,841 students are enrolled across all three phases of the project. Therefore, to date the project has and continues to serve 2,603 students (current and graduated). School locations are been donated by local community members, these locations are chosen in collaboration with and approved by the Egyptian Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MOETE), in order to serve the areas with the most out-of-school children. Awareness raising sessions are delivered to the community that each school targets, with the aim of communicating the benefits of quality education and how the community school model can best be advanced with the support of the surrounding community. A number of community members are selected and trained to lead the local community’s education committee for each school. The role of the committee is to ensure the sustainability of a quality education experience. Teachers from the community are selected, intensively trained to ensure the establishment of safe learning environments and the delivery of quality education. That is in addition to the trainings provided to the different subject supervisors from the education directorates, in order to well prepare and equip them with the best methods to support the teachers across all subjects. Each school is run by two teachers with the support of the education committees and the directorate of education.
