Recognizing and integrating scientific knowledge of whale and dolphin culture into international protection efforts

Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) (
Non-governmental organization (NGO)
)
#OceanAction47362
    Description
    Description

    WDC believes that no ocean conservation efforts or delivery of SDG 14, can succeed without recognising the essential nature of cetaceans as individuals and societies. Burgeoning evidence on social learning and cetacean culture, from migration to whale song, can inform conservation efforts and provides important insights on who cetaceans are, as well as their social and habitat requirements. WDC is committed to working across international fora to explore how cetacean cultures interface with their conservation, both in terms of defining the ‘unit to conserve’ and informing conservation mitigation efforts in line with SDG14. WDC has been leading work in this field under the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and chairs a group of 70+ experts who are working to integrate non-human culture into conservation efforts for a broad range of vertebrate taxa. WDC is committed to extending the scientific and philosophical frontiers of this field, by exploring the nexus between human and cetacean cultures.

    Regarding targets covered : 14.2

    WDC works through the UNEP Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) to develop case studies and build understanding of the multifaceted ways in which non-human culture can interface with conservation efforts and help to define the ‘unit to conserve’. Work in this area led to the establishment of a group of more than 70 international experts (CMS Expert Group on Animal Culture), working together under CMS to examine how non-human culture can influence both the ‘unit to conserve’ and the efficacy and efficiency of conservation efforts. We are committed to promoting the use of a framework which incorporates tools and methods for recognising culture in the wild, determining how non-human culture interfaces with conservation efforts in these instances and the development of policy to ensure effective conservation of cultural species and the safeguarding of their cultures as an integral aspect of their biodiversity.
