Major Group: Workers & Trade
Dear Madam/Sir
My Name is Molly Dhlamini. On Monday the 3rd of May 2010, I made an intervention on behalf
of the workers and the trade unions major Group. The intervention was as follows: question and
comment
1. Are African governments looking into processing and making final products from the ore that
is mined? The historical political economy of Africa has been characterized by exporting raw
materials without value adding. This can have a potential of job creation in the mining sector and
extending economic activity in the mine even when mining is no longer taking place.
2. Are governments observing how mining is done? Mining which focuses only on excreting
high grade ore at the expense of also extracting low grade ore has a potential of reducing the life
of the mine and thus shortening the period of employment, thus contributing to unsustainability.
Thank you
