Guardian of the Generation: Water is Close to Me!
Yayasan Gugah Nurani Indonesia
While the world is struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic and water has become an important instrument to prevent the spread of the virus, a number of citizens in Indonesia are still struggling with the availability of clean water in their lives. People of Compang Ndejing Village of East Manggarai Regency are among them. The only source of water they use is from the Wae Musur river. It is located about 3 kilometers from residential areas. The road to the river is also steep and it is not the clean water that villagers usually take, but rather strong turbid water containing E.coli bacteria, it was discovered after laboratory testing results. There is no spring in the village. Another option is to collect rainwater when the rainy season arrives. The bottled drinking water is possible to buy, but villagers cannot always afford it because they don't necessarily have the money.
The main concept of this project is the development of water facility using ecofriendly technology so that the community can access clean water directly in their houses. The concept of activities is in the form of: a) Main Water Facilities The facilities for the main support are to build an infiltration well, installation of Solar Energy Power Supply, and construction of main water reservoir with 30,000 litres capacity. b) Water Access to Households In corporation with community and village government, GNI emphasize to work together in order to each house can directly access this water. Through village government (BUMDES), they are going to manage in order to community are able to support this project by providing at average Rp 500,000 for every household (there are 563 families). GNI supports main facilities such as 3 water reservoirs and pipe for 3,875 m. c) Water Access to Schools & Public Facilities By this project, there are some schools as the target beneficiaries and one public health center (PUSTU). This is to ensure that public facilities have access to water. d) Community based Management The sustainability count on community based management. GNI facilitates village government (BUMDES) to establish the water management. It is strongly recommended in BUMDES as the management. For the technician, there will be a training for water management on water treatment techniques and infrastructure. GNI conducted campaign for the crowdfunding in this project and worked together with local government to allocate budget to finish this project.
Since 1970, Compang Ndejing Village in East Manggarai Regency has difficulty on water access. The villagers need to afford to water by the nearby river which is about 3 kilometers. Every household need to bring water from the river and it takes 2 (two) or 3 (three) times a day. To get the water to house, it will take about an hour so that people spend around 2 or 3 hours a day to afford to water. While they still need to work for their daily need. Nowadays, 100% of community has access to water by this project. This will improve their quality of life especially from the hygiene behavior, children have more time to learn and fulfill their right. This is to save the future generation of this area.
As the basic need of human being, this project is well implemented as the contribution the community and government themselves. They are fully support for the success of the project by establishment for Water Community Committee and government has been supporting by allocating budget in village fund as well as the publication for village regulation on water management. This successful project is due to GNI always convey the core values to community. They are universality, sustainability, child rights, harmonization, participation, partnership, transparency, and sharing values.
SDGs outlined the universal goal for good health and well-being for agenda 2030. In line with our core values, this project is applicable in wide world that we should not left no-one behind. The successful project is to meet the need from community and to facilitate government so that they can contribute to the project. Community empowerment is an approach that we applied to run this project. As the result is that community is willing to keep the facility safe. Moreover, village government is the most necessary stakeholder to ensure the sustainability. Working with them, we established community management for the water facility supported by BUMDES (village social enterprise). By involving community and government from the beginning of the project, this made higher contribution from them for the success of the project. The beginning is started from project planning. Their contribution is endless until the running of the project. This is proven by village government that they allocate village fund to ensure every household receive water access. This community management committee consists of community members that will also monitor the water management. They involve in planning from village government through Village Budget (red: APBDES).
