The United Nations Local2030 Coalition is the United Nations system-wide platform dedicated to advancing the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level. Bringing together 14 United Nations entities and 5 stakeholder constituencies – national governments, local and regional governments, civil society and academia, youth, and the private sector – the Coalition promotes stronger coordination, coherence and impact across the United Nations system by connecting global commitments and national priorities with local realities to drive territorial transformation and sustainable development outcomes. At the SDG Summit in September 2023, the Local2030 Coalition was recognized as one of the 12 official High Impact Initiatives (HIIs) supporting transformative progress towards achieving the SDGs by 2030.
The 2023 SDG Summit also identified six SDG transitions where integrated and game-changing interventions can generate catalytic and multiplier effects across the SDGs: (1) food systems; (2) energy access and affordability; (3) digital connectivity; (4) education; (5) jobs and social protection; and (6) climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. The six SDG transitions represent catalytic pathways for accelerating implementation of the 2030 Agenda. These transitions converge most directly at the local level, where integrated and people-centred solutions can be implemented in practice.
This policy brief presents the Local2030 Coalition’s guidance on how national and local governments, constituent groups, and communities, with the support of the United Nations, can contextualize these transitions to address local priorities and improve people’s lives (i.e. localize the six transitions). It examines the challenges, successful practices, and enabling conditions needed to sustain, amplify, replicate, and adapt approaches that advance their localization for greater impact in accelerating the SDGs.
