Onboard Foundation - Young Women for Equality Initiative

    The Onboard Foundation aims to provide an international and safe space for the next generation to express their views and opinions, while nurturing the wider community to understand global issues. Our initiative for 2020 is Young Women for Equality, and its goal is to educate and to act. Our forum will feature posts written by young women advancing change globally, and provide opportunities for members to raise awareness in their own local communities, through weekly online events focusing on different important inequality issues. This initiative helps young women activists act upon their beliefs while honing writing and essential life skills.
    Expected Impact

    To maximise community involvement, the initiative will be carried out through the main website of Onboard Foundation and an online community hosted on the website. Young Women for Equality aims to educate the public through regular posts about the current situation on the three specified SDGs, and there will be self-posted entries from members of the community on a weekly basis. There is no membership fee, and the website is accessible to all, including students of any age. For the weekly webinars, the main topics will be focusing on economic inequality such as the pay gap, social inequality such as discrimination against the way a person looks, and inequalities high school girls collectively face in Asia. They will mostly be run by the members as they will share inequalities within their societies which are relevant to the theme for a certain week. We hope to bring in established women activists that have covered the week’s theme. Other possible themes include inequality during the pandemic, inequality against girls, protection for the LGBTI community, economic inequality, and micro-aggression.

    Capacity

    SDG 4, 10 and 16, and any project or initiatives associated with them undertaken by the Onboard Foundation will feature the building of a community of both adults and youth, brought together by their passion to address the impact on daily life. There is no equality without sustainability. As such, over the period of ten weeks, a final video will be curated and submitted at the end. This final project shall take advantage of existing open-sourced technological solutions which allow any members, no matter the age, to take concrete steps in their own lives as well as those within their communities to make a positive impact on the world. This video submission on Young Women for Equality will become a resource available on Onboard Foundation’s website and will complete the 2020 summer initiative.

    Governed

    The basis of Young Women For Equality is mostly a community, as we are encouraging young women to speak up for their beliefs and take action. Our team members are Erina Yano, Sabrina Ottoway and Kierah Harris who will each manage a regional branch of the initiative. Our main platform is our website, but we will also use social media platforms as well as forums within the website to build our community, spread awareness and increase membership registrations. To track our progress, we will submit a weekly report onto the UN SDG Partnership Platform as well as make frequent blog posts about each forum discussion. Further governance will be provided by our advisors, including seasoned professionals representing Causeway Education, Global Citizen Capital and Better Together Foundation.
