Implementation of Ten-point Plan of Action for Marine Conservation and Sustainable Fisheries of German Development Cooperation

The Ten-point Plan of Action for Marine Conservation and Sustainable Fisheries - launched by BMZ in 2016 - draws together ten key activities the Ministry aims to address in its development cooperation with partner countries in the marine realm and serves as a guideline for engaging in and promoting new and innovative projects and partnerships. Fields of action include the strengthening and expansion of marine protected areas; promotion of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture and combatting IUU fishing; reduction of land-based marine littering, strengthening the resilience of coastal zones against the impacts of climate change; promoting partnerships for instance private sector engagement, regional ocean governance or science-policy exchange.o In 2016/17 approx. US$ 218 Mio. have been committed to the implementation of the Plan of Action, substantially exceeding the amount of US$ 180 Mio. originally planned.
o In 2016/17 a total of 42 new projects or project extensions contributing entirely to the implementation of the Plan of Action were committed (excluding Blue Action Fund).
o As of 2019, BMZ supports 57 bilateral, regional and global projects with a total sum of 280 Mio. (excluding Blue Action Fund) that actively contribute to achieving the goals set out in the Ten-point Plan of Action for Marine Conservation and Sustainable Fisheries.
Beneficiaries
BMZ supports 57 bilateral, regional and global projects with a focus on marine conservation and sustainable fisheries. With its focus on developing countries, all activities in partner countries of German development cooperation are developed jointly with partner agencies and respond to local needs. Generally, the target groups of bilateral projects in the area of marine conservation and sustainable fisheries are natural resource-dependent coastal communities.
