Peru carried out the Twenty-ninth Peruvian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica - ANTAR XXIX from January 19 to March 29, 2023 with a total duration of 70 days. In this regard, the country arranged for the operation and maintenance of the Antarctic Scientific Station Machu Picchu (ECAMP), located in the Mackellar Inlet of King George Island, one of the South Shetland Islands located at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula; as well as the use of mobile platforms, such as the maritime platform, the BAP Carrasco, a polar-capable oceanographic vessel with technology capable of developing scientific research projects in oceanography, hydrography, marine meteorology, magnetic prospecting and marine geology, and carrying out work with oceanographic buoys and nautical signaling. Likewise, Peru's logistical capabilities in Antarctica for security support in search and rescue cases are represented by the Hercules-L100 aircraft and the BELL-212 helicopter, which also provide complementary logistical support for transport and cargo in the Antarctic Treaty area.In the aforementioned ANTAR XXIX expedition, developed in a complex context due to the recent COVID 19 pandemic, the following four research projects on marine biodiversity, microplastics and nutrition were carried out by Peruvian universities:
- Polychaetes as biological indicators on macrobenthos trophic interactions in Mackellar Inlet, King George Island, Antarctica.
- Evaluation of the presence of microplastics in the coastal ecosystem of the Znosko glacier and monitoring of the bird and marine mammal communities on the glacier beach and surrounding areas.
- Macronutrients and toxics in Antarctic macroalgae.
- Micronutrient supply in the ANTAR XXI Expeditionary's diet.
