From STI Forum Innovator to Global Recognition: Dr. Addisu’s Enset Innovation Continues to Transform Lives in Ethiopia
Last year, the STI Forum had the privilege of presenting its Innovator Prize to Dr. Addisu, an Ethiopian scientist whose groundbreaking work on enset fermentation promised to reshape food security in his home country. Today, that promise is being realized in ways that have exceeded all expectations.
Dr. Addisu, based in Arba Minch, developed a faster, safer, and more effective fermentation method for enset, the staple food for millions in South Ethiopia. What began as a scientific breakthrough has blossomed into a full-fledged movement of economic development. The innovation has spurred the establishment of several startups, created new jobs, and most importantly, encouraged families to return to their villages to participate in the growing enset processing industry, opening new shops and companies.
The recognition from the STI Forum served as a powerful catalyst. Since receiving the prize, Dr. Addisu’s work has garnered significant national and international acclaim, including:
- African Planet Prize – African Academy of Sciences (Pretoria, South Africa)
- Japan International Young Agricultural Researcher Award (Tokyo, Japan)
- Ministry of Agriculture Special Award (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)
- Best Enterprise Award – Lucy Enset (South Ethiopia)
- Innovation of the Year Award – Ethiopian Intellectual Property Right Office (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)
Dr. Addisu's journey is a powerful testament to how supporting local innovation can yield extraordinary dividends—from enhancing food security to driving economic growth and revitalizing communities. His story continues to inspire and serves as a shining example of science in action.
