Background

UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism support for G-STIC 2020

The Global Sustainable Technology & Innovation Community (GSTIC) and the United Nations Secretariat as convenor of the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) have cooperated ever since the earliest phases when G-STIC was devised.

The latest edition of G-STIC 2020 was held in a blended virtual and face-to-face fashion from 26 to 28 October 2020. The TFM 10-Member-Group of high-level representatives of civil society, the private sector and the scientific community – appointed by the UN Secretary General - actively participated also this year. On 27 October, a “Roundtable of the 10-Member-Group on Science and Technology Advice for the SDGs” was held. It discussed lessons-learnt for science-policy advice from the COVID-19 pandemic, means and ways to make the science and engineering system “fit” for the SDGs, and explored ways for engagement in the TFM and a vision for science and technology diplomacy in the future.

The Group also organized deep-dive sessions on “STI roadmaps as a tool to build preparedness and resilience to COVID-19 and future health crises” on 27 October which brought the TFM’s interagency work on STI roadmaps to the Conference, as well as a plenary session on “Looking beyond COVID-19: integrated pathways to address health, economy and climate” on 28 October which looked at lessons on addressing pandemics in the longer-term future.

Finally, the Secretariat supported a “High-Level dialogue with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Gro Harlem Brundtland” on 28 October. GSTIC has greatly complemented the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) through its support for companies, social and economic actors to think outside the box and create win-win technology and innovation solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals – solutions that are good for the economy, for the environment and for the people.
