Background
The United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023 (resolution A/RES/78/148) to start in 2026. The UN Decade is a unique opportunity to raise the profile of sustainable transport in multilateral arenas and to highlight its importance in peoples’ lives, for our planet and for sustainable development at large. On 10 December 2025, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) organized the launch of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026 – 2035 and its associated Implementation Plan as a special event in the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the UN Headquarters.
The High-level Political Forum on sustainable development (HLPF), as the United Nations’ central platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda, provides a unique opportunity to highlight the contribution of sustainable transport to SDG implementation. In this context, this Special Event will serve as the first annual stocktake of progress under the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport and provide an opportunity to consider the strong interlinkages between sustainable transport and the SDGs.
The Special Event aims to take stock of early progress in the implementation of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport and to highlight the synergies action on sustainable transport can generate to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The event will be held in person and in English only. The Special Event will bring together representatives from Member States, United Nations entities, international organizations, academia, and other stakeholders engaged in sustainable transport. The event is open to participants registered for the 2026 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and holders of valid United Nations grounds passes. Participants who do not have access to United Nations Headquarters may request a Special Events Ticket (SET) through the registration link below. The event is organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
Registration: Registration for participants requiring a Special Events Ticket (SET) is now closed. Registered participants will receive further information regarding their attendance. Participants who are registered for the 2026 HLPF or who already have valid United Nations grounds passes may attend the event in person without registering through the SET process.
