UN Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026 – 2035 and Climate Action
Background
In 2023, the United Nations General Assembly, through resolution 78/148, declared the first-ever United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035). The United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport will be an opportunity to further raise awareness of transport’s crucial role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and to gather and rally new solutions, resources and partnerships to advance sustainable transport globally.
Held during the first year of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport, COP31 offers an important platform to strengthen the links between climate action and the transformation of transport systems. It provides an opportunity to highlight the contribution of sustainable transport to mitigation, adaptation and resilience, while exploring how climate and development objectives, policies, investments and partnerships can be better aligned.
The Sustainable Transport morning at the SDG Pavilion will therefore consider how the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport can help translate global commitments into practical action and accelerate progress towards transport systems that support climate action and sustainable development for all.
Key questions
The discussions will be guided by the following questions:
- How can the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport accelerate implementation of climate action across passenger and freight transport?
- What practical measures can enable a transition towards low-carbon, resilient and environmentally sound transport systems while improving access, safety, affordability and inclusion?
- How can climate and development finance, investment and partnerships be better aligned to support sustainable transport transformation, particularly in developing countries?
- What can be learned from the first year of the Decade, including from Sustainable Transport Action Commitments and other initiatives, and how can successful approaches be scaled and replicated?
- How can governments, cities, the private sector, development partners, civil society, academia and other stakeholders strengthen cooperation and accountability for implementation throughout the UN Decade?
Format
The event will consist of an opening and a focused panel discussion, with multi-stakeholder representation. The panel discussion will be followed by a dedicated Q&A session to seek the views, comments and questions from the audience. The event will be streamed online to provide the opportunity for a global audience to follow the discussions. The event will be conducted only in English with no interpretation.
