Background
UNDESA in collaboration with UNESCO and UN ECA is implementing the project Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for Integrated Climate Action for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The project supports three Lusophone SIDS (Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe) to strengthen their capacity to develop, deploy, and expand their use of STI in the context of the SDGs and particularly for building ocean knowledge and coastal resilience. The Project aims to strengthen the capacity of government officials and other stakeholders to utilize science, technology and innovation effectively for advancing climate resilience and nature-based solutions in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
As part of the Project, a baseline assessment of the current STI landscape in Cabo Verde with a focus on blue economy, coastal climate resilience and nature-based solutions has been prepared. The Assessment provides an evidence-based diagnostic of the national STI landscape, national strategies, technology priorities, institutional capacities and enabling conditions, explicitly designed to support strategic decision-making, prioritization and roadmap formulation to facilitate implementation.
The STI4SDG Baseline Validation and Roadmap Development Workshop represents an opportunity for critical transition in the overall STI4SDG process at the national level i.e. moving from diagnostic analysis to the development of an implementation-oriented roadmap for operationalization of the country’s STI priorities. The workshop is also an opportunity to ensure coherence between other ongoing national and international initiatives relevant to STI, sustainable development and climate action in Cabo Verde.
