Concept
As climate change and the ocean are inextricably linked, it is of utmost importance to ensure that ocean action is taken in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals and in a way that it is coherent and mutually-reinforcing with climate mitigation and adaptation. This side event at the Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Maximizing Co-Benefits by Linking Implementation across SDGs and Climate Action recognizes the need for accelerating integrated action at all levels. It seeks to raise awareness and improve the understanding of the linkages between climate change and ocean and aims to illustrate how those synergies can be effectively addressed. Participants will further identify potential entry points and present specific examples of complementary approaches for achieving SDG 14 in the light of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda. The outcomes will inform the in-depth review of SDG 13 at the HLPF in 2019 as well as follow-up activities to the 2017 UN Ocean Conference, including the Communities of Ocean Action.
Opening remarks will be delivered by Ambassador Peter Thomson, the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean.
The panel will consist of speakers from Member States and other stakeholders, including representatives of think tanks.
