Background
Investments for Water : Financing, technology and innovation, and capacity building
Co-chairs : France and South Africa
Interactive Dialogue F makes the economic case for water investment explicit. Freshwater use generates an estimated USD 58 trillion in annual economic value, which is approximately 60% of global GDP, while water scarcity and poor management already cost the global economy up to 9% of GDP each year in lost productivity, health burdens and supply chain disruption. Meeting SDG 6 will require more than US$1 trillion annually. Over 90% of current water financing comes from public budgets. Meeting SDG 6 demands increased financing from all sources, including greater investment of private capital and scaling up of hybrid and blended finance instruments like debt-for-water swaps and blue bonds. A holistic approach to investments for water will also involve commitment to meaningful capacity development and the strategic deployment of technology and innovation.
