    Intro

    In order to mitigate climate change and improve food security, the initiative pursues climate Smart Agriculture by supporting ecosystem-based adaptation for agriculture development and soil and forest smart conservation.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

    The project aims at scaling up Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and best practices of ecosystem-based adaptation for agriculture development and soil and forest smart conservation in two ecosystems of the Vakinankaratra region, covering the Highland and Middle West regions. Main activities are related to promoting tree plants production (nurserymen capacity building) as well as good quality seeds and biopesticides produced and available locally (based on the demands by farmers). Relevant stakeholders’ (lead farmers, nurserymen, and teachers) capacities were built through reforestation activities with fruit trees and the development of pilot demonstration sites (smart agriculture development and soil and forest smart conservation). The meteorology regional services are involved in the process by organising workshops on the use of meteorological data and by distributing meteorological bulletins for easy understanding of all stakeholders. Lead farmers followed up the adoption of the process by new farmers (1,639 farmers from which 40% are women) to expand capacities for conservation agriculture and agroforestry. Support has been provided to various stakeholders to get financial access for CSA projects development as well.

    Enabling factors and constraints

    Success factors include the development of stakeholders and agricultural suppliers networks, and ongoing exchanges between new farmers and experienced farmers. Constraints include changing from old to new farming practices takes time until best results can be demonstrated to potential agricultural producers.

    Sustainability and replicability

    The Climate Smart Agriculture methods to improve food security by ecosystem-based adaptation for agriculture development and soil and forest smart conservation is replicable in rainfed agriculture countries with soil degradation.

    COVID-19 Impact
