PERMANENT MISSION OF SOLOMON ISLANDS TO THE UNITED NATIONS
Statement by H.E. Mr. Collin Beck,
Permanent Representative of Solomon Islands to the United Nations, At the 10th session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals: Cluster 5 Sustainable cities and human settlements, Promote Sustainable Consumption and Production and Climate, New York, 3rd, April 2014
Thank you Co-Chairs,
Let me assured you of my delegations support for your leadership of the work you that you are doing on Sustainable development Goals.
I wanted to make a quick intervention on my delegation’s views on the elements that were not captured among the 19 focused areas that you have covered in the document that we are discussing. I have listened to other speakers, and all have been talking only about poverty eradication as the only over arching for the sustainable development goals.
To my delegation, the overarching goal for the SDGS is not just about poverty eradication but is also about the health of the planet.
1 Healing the health of the planet.
2. Poverty Eradication
Preservation of the health of the planet is the single most important element missing from the document on the focus areas on sustainable development, which is linked to Climate Change. We have to prevent the world from reaching the tipping point where climate change becomes irreversible with sea level rise and ocean acidification define our future.
Climate Change must be seen as a standalone goal. The Climate Change standalone goal my delegation is proposing is as follows:
Goal: To stabilize global temperature increase to no more than below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Targets in this regard must be science driven and sufficient to put us on a path to achieve a 1.5 degree Celsius world and suggested as follows:
Target 1: Close the pre2020 mitigation gap on green house gas emissions to put the world on a path of achieving a goal of stabilizing temperature increase to below 1.5 degrees Celsius by 14 GTCO2 Target 2: Post 2020 mitigation target to stabilize global temperature increase to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Target 3: Scaling up by investment in safe and clean renewable energy and infrastructure sufficient to put us on a path of achieving a below temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius
Target 4: Increase the rate of investment in environmentally friendly industries, and infrastructure that strengthens the resilience and security of all countries, particularly the most vulnerable including SIDS, against the adverse impact of climate change and natural disasters. Target 5: Climate proof current and future infrastructure, and build safe islands through Promotion of economic incentives for investments in low-carbon solutions
Target 6: Build resilience and adaptive capacity against the adverse impact of climate change and natural disaster in all countries, particularly the vulnerable countries.
Target 7: Increase investment in education and mass awareness on climate change.
Mr. Co-chair without a climate change goal we cannot promote other SDGs if they fall short of not guaranteeing humanity’s survival.
I thank you.
