Background

This event is jointly organized by the Division for Sustainable Development Goals, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the United Nations (DSDG/DESA) together with the Micro and Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA) Kenya. It aims to explore good practices in promoting Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) formalization through leveraging the cooperative enterprise model and drawing on lessons from the successful experience of Kenya in this regard, with a particular focus on policy space and business support systems. Mr. Amson Sibanda, Chief, National Strategies and Capacity Building Branch, DSDG/DESA and Mr. Henry Rithaa, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Micro, Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA) Kenya, will deliver keynote speeches at the event, together with senior officials from the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development, Kenya.

DSDG/DESA has supported formulating the MSEA Strategic Plan 2020-2024 that constitutes an overarching framework to address key challenges facing the growth of the MSME sector in Kenya. The strategic plan has highlighted priorities to expand contributions of MSMEs to sustainable development visions, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Kenya Vision 2030 and the Big 4 Agenda, in which the issue of MSME formalization has been included. Based on the collaboration between DSDG/DESA and the MSEA, this webinar will further present evidence-based solutions on promoting MSME formalization through the cooperative enterprise model and how it will contribute to MSME resilience in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era, with good practices from both Kenya and other countries in Africa.
